'One person dying every six hours': how you can help change this with $10
New raffle offers a golden prize for a vital cause.
Cancer survivor Jay Allen OAM, and the team at Australian Skin Cancer Foundation (ASCF), are steadfast in their deep commitment to fight melanoma.
On the Mission Melanoma Walk - now a regular event - Jay has trekked more than 10,000 kilometres to raise much-needed funds for cancer research and prevention.
On December 1, the foundation launched its second - and the world's first - mobile skin-check truck equipped with a biopsy room and a 3D Vectra skin-check machine.
Fundraising is critical for this non-profit organisation to fulfil its mission, Jay said, and the foundation has a new fundraiser underway, offering a chance to win $50,000 in gold bullion.
"We need to keep our trucks on the road, and your support can help us save lives - one truck stop at a time," Jay said. "One person is still dying every six hours from melanoma in Australia."
Proceeds from the campaign will also fund research and the ongoing efforts to cure melanoma.
Jay said despite the amazing research already undertaken, and improvements to immunotherapy, trials are at about 50 per cent.
"This means treatment only works for 50 to 60 per cent of patients. So there's that 40 to 50 per cent of people that treatment does not work for, and those people are sadly dying," Jay said. "We just need to keep funding research - research means hope."
ASCF has a clear and determined vision for the future and the fight against melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.
"We want to have mobile skin-check clinics across every state and territory so nobody ever has to pay for a skin check, and access is right at their doorstep," Jay said.
