What is Melanoma Mates?

When someone is diagnosed with melanoma or non-melanoma skin cancers it can be a very isolating and lonely journey.
Even for those with the best family and friend support, no one can truly understand your experience, which is why we have come up with Melanoma Mates.

Melanoma Mates is a national initiative for anyone that has lost a loved one, going through a diagnosis or have fought melanoma or non melanoma skin cancer.

We know it is so empowering and a relief to talk to someone who is going through a similar journey to you and we also know of many who when connecting with others on this journey it is the beginning of a new support network and some amazing lifetime friendships.

How does it work?

Those signing up to ‘Melanoma Mates’ will be matched by us with another person who is similar in age, location and on a similar skin cancer journey.

There will be two rounds of Melanoma Mates per year where we will match you with a mate.
The first intake usually happens is May with registered participants being told of their match in June.

We are so happy about this initiative and look forward to finding you a Melanoma Mate for everyone.

After signing up, when will I receive my match?

After matching with your mate, it is then up to you and your mate how you connect.
You will only receive their email address. After connecting via email some people might like to communicate via email, text, phone or in person.

Will I be matched with someone nearby?
We hope to match you with a mate who lives as close to you as possible. I.e., if you live in Sydney, we hope to find a mate in Sydney for you. We will try our best!

What is I don’t click with my match?

That’s ok, not everyone is supposed to get along. If you don’t click with your mate, or they don’t reply, simply sign up for the next round.

What if I don’t hear from my match?

Please only sign up to the program if you have every intention to find a Melanoma Mate.
We know for some it takes enormous courage to step out of their comfort zone to meet someone new, let alone share their personal skin cancer story with someone.
